4 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Feel Cozy This Fall

cozy-fall

Changing leaves, scented candles, sweaters, and flannels? Fall has arrived! To celebrate what is undoubtedly the coziest season of the year, our team decided to share some of our favorite ways to create a comfortable atmosphere in your home.

Keep reading to learn our top four ways to make your home feel cozy this fall:

Splurge on Cozy Essentials

The only thing better than breaking out big blankets and fuzzy socks is buying new essentials to help you stay warm and comfortable as the temperatures dip. Whether you opt for a chunky knit sweater, a cozy fleece throw, or some fun and festive socks, your couch will be the place to be this autumn.

Host a (Safe) Backyard Bonfire

There’s nothing like having a bonfire complete with s’mores. Adding an overnight backyard camping element to the mix only adds to the adventure! Follow these steps to create your own backyard bonfire, and make sure to teach the whole family some essential fire safety rules:

  • Never leave the fire unattended

  • Keep small hands and pets away from fire

  • Never throw fireworks or pressurized canisters into a fire--this could cause an explosion

  • When you’re ready to extinguish the fire, make sure the embers are out by stirring the ashes and dousing the fire with water

Be sure to follow local and state fire guidelines regarding potential burn bans in your area. Safety first!

Bake Some Tasty Treats

There’s nothing quite like the taste of a warm apple pie or a savory stew, but with some many amazing flavors and seasonal foods to try, you can have a different meal every day of the week!

For classic comfort food, try Country Living’s recipe for a stovetop chicken pot pie. For a stronger autumn-feel, make Delish’s creamy pumpkin soup with grilled cheese croutons. If you’re feeling really adventurous, copy Tieghan from half baked harvest and create this oh-so-fall recipe for a brie and cheddar apple beer sou with cinnamon pecan oat crumble.

Check on Your Furnace

The most effective way to keep your home warm and cozy all fall and into winter is to keep an eye and ear out for signs of furnace failure. You may need a new furnace if:

  • Your furnace is older than 15 years old. The average lifespan for a furnace is 15-20 years. The better you care for your system, the longer it will last, but an older furnace has to work harder to heat your home and can lead to carbon monoxide emissions.

  • Your furnace is screeching. Your furnace could make many sounds to indicate it’s in need of repairs, but screeching typically only means one thing--a motor malfunction that could lead to a total system breakdown.

  • Your system needs continuous repairs. A good rule of thumb to help you decide when it’s time to replace your furnace is to keep tabs on how much your current system costs you--when the price of the repairs adds up to at least half the cost of a new system, it’s more cost-efficient to simply replace your system with a newer model.
